BuildingSound is a radio program produced by the Institute for Advanced Architecture for the Independent Media Center, Los Angeles, to bebroadcast on the last Monday of every month from 4 to 6pm PST on killradio.org, and archived below.

Building Soundexplores radio as a medium for experimental architectural representation and dialog. Collectivelyproduced by individuals with diverse approaches to and interests in architecture, the programsituates itself at the confluence of a broad array of disciplines and styles.

March 28,2005 : Interview. An interview with Los Angeles architect and curator, Fritz Haeg. Locatedin the garden of his house and recorded binaurally. Headphones are recommended for maximum spatialeffect.

February 28, 2005 :Lecture 3. Katherine Hayles discusses her body of work in a talk delivered to the UCLA Design |Media Arts department. This material follows nicely from that in the December 2004 'Extensions'program.

This month, Building Sound investigates the maintenance ofLos Angeles'freedom mythology by listening both to those agencies entrusted with keeping traffic moving as wellas to representations of the freeways and streets. Material includes "Reyner Banham Loves LosAngeles;" "The Italian Job;" "Play It As It Lays;" an interview with a representative fromCalTrans; a representative from ATSAC; a guide to the current exhibition at the CLUI by SteveRowell; and some comments from Ed Dimendberg's lecture "The Kinetic Icon:Reyner Banham and theInvention of Los Angeles."

February 23,2004 : Art XOR Architecture. This month, we listen to Dave Hickey lecture about thisrelationshipat the level of practice, concluding that architecture is not art. A few comments inthe news from an architect, museum director, and public radio announcer refocus the show towardsmuseum design. November 24,2003 : Electronic Cafe. two pioneers of telematic art, Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitzdiscussing nearly three decades of their work, including the creation of the Electronic Cafe International - the world's first "wired" cafe. Ina networked world, where the Internet is second nature,they provide a rare look at early attemptsat place-making by using (many now forgotten) communication technologies in order to create newcontexts for interaction.
